Douglas J. Jones, Jr., M.D., founder of Metabolic Medical Centers, was a leading expert in the field of obesity and metabolic disorders. For 15 years, he was a full-time professor at the Medical University of South Carolina. He served as the Assistant Chairman of the Department of Medicine for 6 years and as the Director of the Division of Endocrinology Laboratories for 8 years. His research included hypo-metabolic disorders, obesity, and obesity-related disorders—cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and musculoskeletal problems.

Dr. Jones was a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and Endocrinology and Metabolism and a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. A graduate of Furman University and the Medical University of South Carolina, Dr. Jones received his training in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology at Vanderbilt University where he also completed a fellowship in Endocrinology under the direction of Dr. Grant Liddle.

In 1996, Dr. Jones, alarmed by the sharp increase in the incidence of obesity and obesity-related diseases, decided to put his 25 years of research and experience into a practice designed to help high-risk patients lose the weight that was putting their lives in jeopardy. Believing that “we have to treat the underlying causes of obesity instead of treating the side effects”, Dr. Jones developed treatment programs that use the latest and most innovative medical research and technologies. His high success rate in helping patients control obesity was informed by his knowledge that “obesity is not a personal failure but a battle against biology”, a message he delivered with compassionate understanding.

He established the first Metabolic Medical Center in Charleston, SC where he made his home with his wife and three sons. He enjoyed gardening, cooking, and riding his tractor.
