What are dermal fillers and how long do they last?
The reason there is an appearance of aging over time is due to volume loss in the face from fat, muscle, and bone breakdown as we age. This volume loss in combination with gravity causes the skin of the face to appear saggy and creates wrinkles. The purpose of dermal fillers is to restore the volume that has been lost due to aging. Dermal fillers can also improve the texture of the skin by stimulating collagen/elastin production giving it a more youthful appearance. Dermal fillers come in two types. There are replacement fillers and biostimulatory fillers. Replacement fillers are the traditional hyaluronic acid filler or HA filler. They simply replace the lost volume of the face to fill out particular areas that then stretch the skin to smooth lines and wrinkles. Compared to the biostimulatory fillers they do not stimulate as much collagen or elastin production but their effects are immediate. Their duration is variable, 4 months to 2 years, depending on the brand of filler used. HA fillers have different properties (level of firmness, dispersion, and duration) amongst the brands which makes their use in certain areas suitable. Meaning a good injector will not use the same HA filler in the cheeks as they will in the lips since this can create an unnatural appearance.
Biostimulatory fillers do not contain hyaluronic acid but are composed of other components or even the client’s own plasma growth factors. Biostimulatory fillers will replace some volume but they are significantly better at stimulating the skin’s own production of collagen and elastin. Due to this process the effects of biostimulatory fillers can be seen up to 3-4 months after treatment and the duration tends to be on the longer side 2 years up to 5 years. Some examples of biostimulatory fillers are Radiesse, Sculptra, PRP/PRF, and PDO/PLLA threads.
What are the cost of dermal fillers?
Once again variable based on level of aging and area treated. The starting range per treatment area is $300-700 and we express to clients that treatments with fillers is likely a building process that may require several treatments spaced out for the desired results. We do not pressure clients into purchasing several syringes of fillers at a single treatment because this is what can create an unnatural look and increases cost of treatment.
